Mahindra-Jawa factory to make face shields & food packets for Corona Virus lockdown relief
The number of coronavirus cases is on a rise in India and major automobile manufacturers including Maruti, Hyundai, Mahindra have announced they will help by making new ventilators, face masks and other such devices. Mahindra and Mahindra have announced that they have started assembling face shields at their Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh.
The Pithampur assembly line is very important for the group and it currently manufacturers motorcycles under the Jawa brand name. Since the regular operations are shut down at the plant, Mahindra has started making new face shields that will be very important to the doctors and front-line health workers who are dealing with the coronavirus cases first hand in India.
Mahindra started assembling the face shields at the Kandivali plant in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 30th March. The Pithampur plant has started making the shields recently. It should be noted that Mahindra and Ford, who have joined hands in India worked on the new face shields soon after the coronavirus pandemic in India. Ford Motor Corporation provided the designs for the face shields and they are quite important to save the frontline health workers to keep the virus infection out of the face. The shields can be used with the Personal Protection Equipment to get a safer layer of protection.
Prakash Wakankar, Mahindra and Mahindra’s chief for International Operations for Farm Equipment and Global Two-Wheeler business, revealed in a Tweet that Mahindra’s Pithampur plant is also making 1,000 plus food packets to distribute among the needy people. The food packets are getting made at the kitchen of the plant and are distributed.
Mahindra is also working on the affordable ventilator machines as they will prove to be very important in the recovery of the coronavirus patients. Anand Mahindra, the bossman of the Mahindra Group announced that they have already developed a working prototype of the low-cost ventilator within two days and it is expected to go into mass production after it gets necessary approvals from the authorities.
There are other manufacturers in India who are working to help the authorities to fight against the outbreak. Currently, the whole country is under lockdown and it is expected to be lifted on 14th April. The automobile sector is one of the worst-hit sectors in India and with the slowdown, the market is expected to take years to return to its peak. Nonetheless, the manufacturers are doing their bit by donating and innovating in any way they can.
