Hyundai Elantra BS6 diesel details revealed

Hyundai has officially listed the BS6 diesel Elantra on its website ahead of the model’s introduction later this year. As previously reported, the diesel Elantra gets the company’s new 1.5-litre engine used in other new Hyundai cars, in its 115hp/250Nm state of tune. The unit will be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The diesel variant will be available in two trim levels – SX and SX(O). The SX is manual only while the SX(O) will only be available with the automatic gearbox.
Also in an interesting move Hyundai will be dropping the entry-level S trim from the Elantra line-up bringing the overall number of variants down to just two.
Coming to equipment, the diesel model carries forward the same equipment as the petrol model. The SX trim packs in a fair bit of kit including six airbags, rear-view camera, auto headlamps, sunroof, dual-zone climate control, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Blue Link connected car tech, cruise control and more. The fully loaded SX(O) gets all the bells and whistles, including a powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery and front parking sensors.
The introduction of a diesel Elantra could prove to be crucial for the Elantra with the remainder of the segment now housing only petrol models. With the Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla no longer on sale, the Elantra’s chief rival, for now, is the Honda Civic, which is a petrol-only offering. An all-new Octavia is expected to be introduced next year, while Toyota has pulled the plug on the Corolla with no replacement planned.
