Toyota’s badge engineered Maruti Brezza to be called Urban Cruiser in India

Last year, Toyota launched the first rebadged product from the Maruti Suzuki stable in India – the Baleno based Glanza. The partnership of two automobile giants will see the launch of many new products in the future but the second product from the partnership will the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, which will be known as the Urban Cruiser.

The new Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was launched in the Indian market earlier this year. Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, the new car boasts of a highly fuel-efficient petrol engine with automatic transmission and hybrid system. The new Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is only available with a petrol engine option and soon, Toyota will launch the rebagded version of the sub-4m compact SUV in the Indian market.

Unlike the Glanza, which has no visual change to differentiate it from the Baleno, the Urban Cruiser from Toyota will get a number of changes as per ACI. These visual changes will ensure that the car looks very different from the Vitara Brezza. To give it a more of a Toyota family look, it will get a new front-end with new bumpers, a new grille and most-likely new headlamps. Toyota is also expected to offer a tweaked dashboard to give it a more Toyota feel and look. However, the engine will remain exactly the same as the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki discontinued all the diesel-powered vehicles from its portfolio due to the BS6 emission norms. The car currently is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and is available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates a maximum of 104 Bhp and peak torque of 138 Nm and the figures will remain the same with Toyota’s version too. However, it should be noted that Maruti Suzuki offers the SHVS Smart Hybrid system only with the automatic transmission options of the Vitara Brezza. There are rumours that Maruti Suzuki is working to launch the SHVS system with the manual versions as well. Currently, as per the ARAI test, the automatic version of the Vitara Brezza returns more fuel efficiency than the manual. The upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser may offer the SHVS with both the transmission options from the start.

The Urban Cruiser name belongs to the Cruiser nomenclature that consists of the Land Cruiser brand too. The all-new Toyota Urban Cruiser is expected to be launched in the Indian market by the festive season. Earlier, it was expected to be launched in April 2020 but due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the launch has been deferred to ensure that the market becomes stable again.
