Watch a vintage Jeep outperform Mahindra Scorpio [Video]

Even though Indians love SUV and are one of the best selling segments in the country, we have still not developed a taste for taking these SUVs off-road. There are very few proper SUVs in the country that are capable of handling off-road. There are some private groups that very often take SUVs to explore such off-road trails. Here we have one such video where a Vintage Jeep, Mahindra Scorpio, Maruti Gypsy and Mahindra Bolero can be seen trying to climb a steep section on a trail.
The video has been uploaded by Sumitro on his youtube channel. The video starts by showing the fairly steep climb. The vintage Jeep is the first one to face the steep climb. It is an open top jeep and climbs the section very easily without any drama. Next is the Mahindra Scorpio which is an older version. The driver revs the car and starts climbing once the front wheels had reached the top, the bottom of the SUV hit the ground and could not make any progress. The driver reversed the car brought it down and this time around he attacked the climb with a bit more momentum. The car hit the bottom again but made it to the top because of the momentum.

Next on the line was the Maruti Gypsy hardtop and it climbed the section very easily. Last SUV in the lot was the Mahindra Bolero 4×4. modifications were made to the car and it seemed like the Bolero much more ground clearance than the stock version. Just like the vintage jeep and Maruti Gypsy Mahindra Bolero also made it to the top without any drama.

Why did the Mahindra Scorpio struggle whereas the other SUVs did not. The Vintage Jeep (Willys) was the oldest car in the video. It is the lighest vehicle in the video and the weight of the vehicle definitely comes as an advantage in such places. The combination of short wheelbase and high ground clearance is the other factor which helped Willys climb up the section easily. The Mahindra Scorpio in comparison to the Willys is heavier and the ground clearance was also much lower thanks to the longer wheelbase, due to which the SUV got stuck in the first attempt. Both Gypsy and the Bolero were modified to tackle such situation and Scorpio and Vintage Jeep were in stock settings. This goes on to show how capable vintage jeeps are because of the purpose they were built for – mainly to go off the road.
