Maruti to soon start supplying Vitara Brezza to Toyota

We all know Maruti Suzuki and Japanese car manufacturer Toyota have signed a memorandum of understanding back in 2017, which allows both manufacturers to share their products, components and technology. The first product to come out in that partnership was Toyota Glanza which is basically a rebadged version of Maruti’s premium hatchback Baleno. The second product to come out of this partnership is a rebadged version of Vitara Brezza and it seems like Toyota will be launching it soon in the market. Maruti Suzuki has now confirmed that its board has approved supplying the Compact SUV to Toyota Kirloskar Motor.

As per this agreement, Maruti Suzuki was supposed to supply Baleno premium hatchback and Brezza compact SUV to Toyota. In return, Toyota will provide Maruti Suzuki with Corolla sedan. Once Toyota starts getting the supply from Maruti, they will make required changes and will launch their version in the market soon. Unlike Glanza, which was basically a rebadged version with nearly no changes at all save for different badging, Toyota’s version of Vitara Brezza is likely to look a bit different.

Earlier, it was revealed that the Toyota’s rebadged version of Brezza could be known as Urban Cross. In terms of design, the Toyota Urban Cross is also expected to look a bit from the regular Maruti Brezza. Toyota is expected to make changes to the front grille, bumper both at the front and rear to give it a slightly different look. In terms of equipment and features on the inside, the Urban Cross is likely to be similar to the Brezza.

Apart from the interiors, Toyota will retain some other parts like projector type headlmaps, DRLs, LED tail lights, alloy wheel design from Brezza, in order to keep the costs down. The upcoming sub-4 meter SUV will be Toyota’s first product in this segment in India and will compete with cars like Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundia Venue, Mahindra XUV300.

Maruti Suzuki recently launched the BS6 petrol version of the Brezza in the market and Toyota will continue to use the very same engine. It will get 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Just like Brezza, the automatic version will also get Smart Hybrid system which will make it more fuel efficient than the manual version. The sub-4 meter compact SUV segment will see a slew of new launches in 2020. Apart from the Urban Cruiser, the Kia Sonet, Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite are three other vehicles that have been lined up for launches.
