New Hyundai i20 India launch on track

The coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown has thrown a wrench into many a manufacturer’s timelines and schedules, especially when it comes to new car launches. However, the all-new Hyundai i20 will arrive on schedule.

Speaking to us on #LivewithAutocar on Instagram, Hyundai India’s Director - Sales, Marketing and Service, Tarun Garg, said, "There is no change in the launch schedule for the [new] i20." Due to the current market scenario and talks of extending the lockdown, for now, Hyundai is targeting a festive season launch, a period of strong demand.

This means the third-gen i20 could arrive in India about eight months after it was revealed for international markets. However, the India-spec i20 will have a few changes compared to the model that was unveiled, the most important of which is that its length will duck under the 4 metre mark - the international-spec i20 is 4,040mm-long. This was the case with the previous-gen i20, which measured 4,034mm in international markets, as well. Expect a few styling changes to this sporty-looking premium hatchback as well to better suit India tastes. 

Based on the engine-gearbox options and features that are expected to be available on the new India-bound i20, it may set a new benchmark in the segment on a number of fronts. Garg also mentioned, "[The] new i20 will be a cult brand like its predecessors. It will be worth the wait when it comes."

Hyundai will offer three engine options with the next-gen i20 - a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre diesel and a sporty 1.0-litre turbo-petrol with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Like its predecessor, the new i20 will also score high on the features and technology on offer. The all-new interior layout also includes the new four-spoke steering unit (seen on the recently launched second-gen Creta) and a large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment screen mounted high up on the dashboard. To give it that modern feel, the Korean brand will equip higher variants of the all-new hatchback with a 10.25-inch digital cluster, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Hyundai’s Blue Link in-car connectivity suite and wireless smartphone charging. While features like ambient interior lighting, drive modes for the engine, ventilated front seats and an 8-speaker Bose sound system are available on the international model, it remains to be seen if the India-spec i20 will get them.

As before, the new Hyundai i20 will rival the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, and the Honda Jazz. Expect prices in the Rs 6-12 lakh ex-showroom bracket.
