Okinawa tops e-scooter sales chart in FY2020
Okinawa has announced sales of over 1,000 scooters within a month of its opening showrooms, following government’s relaxation of lockdown rules for economic activity. The company partially resumed operations across dealerships on May 11, with 25 percent workforce.
Our sister publication Autocar Professional’s recent analysis revealed that Okinawa topped the chart in electric scooter sales in India in FY2020 and is the only EV player to sell over 10,000 units in the past fiscal year. Okinawa sold a total of 10,133 units last fiscal and saw strong demand in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The second highest sales were of Hero Electric, with 7,399 units sold in FY2020.
In terms of average monthly sales of high-speed electric two-wheelers in FY2020, Okinawa sold 844 units, Hero Electric sold 617, Ather Energy sold 242, Ampere sold 227 and Revolt clocked 177 units.
“We have witnessed a good demand in the market for electric scooters. We also anticipate that, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of people would want to avoid using public transport, which might increase the demand of new vehicles for personal mobility.” said Jeetender Sharma, managing director, Okinawa.
Okinawa further plans to accelerate its marketing activities to spread awareness about EV adoption. Interestingly, the EV maker has also announced a hike in dealer margin, from 8 percent to 11 percent, to enable its dealer network to make more profits.
