RIP Tata Tiago JTP & Tigor JTP: End of the road!
Formed in 2017, the JT Special Vehicles division was the performance arm of the manufacturer. Tata Motors has now officially announced the discontinuation of the JT Special Vehicles (JTSV) that launched two cars – Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP. The new venture was formed with 50:50 partnership between Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives. The first product from the division came out in 2018 and reportedly, they were also working on the JTP version of the Nexon.
Tata Motors has informed the stock exchanges that it has signed an agreement to purchase the remaining 50% shareholding that belongs to Jayem Automotives in the venture. Following the procurement, the JTSV will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors.
In an official statement, Tata Motors said that even though both the JTP products gained popularity in the market and gathered a lot of appreciation for styling and performance, the market situation in 2019-2020 Financial Year has asked for a mandatory change in strategy. Also, the current situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of changes in the market and has impacted the niche category vehicles by a lot.

Tata has also added that it will continue to provide after-sales services to the current JTP owners at select dealerships throughout India. It should be noted that both the JTP products – the Tiago and the Tigor have over 150 changes when compared to the regular version of the car. However, Tata has ensured that the customers will not face any issue after the desolvation of the unit.
The JTP twins came powered by a turbocharged petrol engine and an array of changes that made them extremely fun to drive. However, both the car did not do well on the sales chart even though a lot of people appreciated both the products. The power comes from a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that develops a maximum power of 112 Bhp and peak torque of 150 Nm. It gets a 5-speed manual transmission.
After launching the cars in 2018, JTSV launched an updated version in 2019 with an updated feature list. The price was also increased by Rs 30,000, making the Tata Tiago JTP priced at Rs 6.69 lakh and the Tigor JTP priced at Rs 7.59 lakhs. Both the cars were available in a single variant.
The Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP were only available in select cities. The selected dealerships are likely to service the JTP cars in these cities. Tata has not officially said anything about the development of upcoming JTP cars. We may get to see the JTP cars in the future when the market situation becomes better and demand for such performance cars rise.
