Skoda Kamiq SUV spied in India: To take on Hyundai Creta & Kia Seltos next year

Skoda Auto India recently updated their portfolio in the Indian market. They launched the BS6 compliant Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI, Skoda Superb, Skoda Octavia vRS 245 and the Karoq SUV. Now the Czech car manufacturer is planning to launch another new product in the market. The Skoda Kamiq is an SUV that is likely to be launched in the Indian market early next year, but with a new badge and plenty of localization to keep the price affordable. The Skoda Kamiq was recently spotted testing on our roads without any camouflage ahead of its launch. Kamiq will compete with cars like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in the compact SUV segment.

Skoda Kamiq is an SUV that is already being sold in the international market. It is based on MQB platform which is same as seen in Volkswagen’s T-Roc, but in India the Kamiq is expected to adopt the MQB A0 platform, specifically designed for emerging markets. In terms of design it is similar to the other Skoda SUVs with bold character lines, signature front grille and a split LED headlamp.The spy pics show the rear of the SUV and it looks like it has a sloping roof which gives it a different look from the rear.

In terms of design it is identical to the international version but, it will loose some of the features when it comes to India. This is mainly to keep the cost in check. Kamiq will be an SUV that is placed below recently launched Karoq and will be the most affordable SUV from the brand. In terms of engine, Skoda will be launching it with a petrol engine only. As part of their latest brand philosophy, Skoda has started dumping their diesel engines and are concentrating more on the petrol engines.

Although Kamiq is available in couple of engine options internationally, the Indian version is likely to be powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged unit. It is the same engine that we have seen in recently launched Skoda Karoq and generates 150 Ps and 250 Nm of torque. The 1.5 litre engine will be paired with a 7-speed DCT as standard. The Kamiq will be Skoda’s answer to the ever expanding compact SUV segment of India, currently dominated by the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
