What happens when reverse gear is engaged at high speed in a Maruti Baleno [Video]

Technology is evolving every day. People over 40 years old today, can’t believe how much smaller the world has become, quality of life has improved multi-folds, life has been made much easier than what it was. It’s unimaginable. But, here we are talking specifically about vehicles. Vehicles only use case was for travelling from point A to point B, eventually, technology helps to power our vehicles with high-end engines and gimmicks to make the car much safer than before. Injury/Death caused due to accidents have been prevented through technology. One of the mistakes new drivers do is by putting the reverse gear while going to the 5th gear. If it happened even 2 decades back, it could have caused damage to the car as well as human life. Well, what happens in cars now? Here’s a video answering this question.

In the video, Arun Panwar is doing this experiment on Maruti Suzuki Baleno. He starts driving the car and eventually takes it at the speed of 50kmph and once the car is constantly treading in this speed, he pulls the gear to the reverse position. If you listen carefully, you’ll be able to hear a scratching noise, which doesn’t sound like anything healthy. Arun does clarify that while doing this activity he didn’t apply a lot of pressure while changing the gear.

What is happening here?

You know for someone who hasn’t studied physics and core mechanical science, it could be extremely difficult to understand. It goes back to the basic of how a transmission works and how it slots into the different gears. But we’d try to put the complete explanation in the closest layman words. To engage successfully and efficiently, the transmission gets syncromesh and the blocker unit, start working at exactly similar speeds.

This is also the reason behind the RPM indicator changing with the change in the gear slot, from higher to lower respectively. In this particular case study, the idle gear, the reverse gear is engaged in a forward-moving car, to put the car into reverse direction. This is exactly why the transmission makes that scratching-grinding noise, especially at a higher speed.

To save your gearbox from any sort of damage, it is advised to bring your car to a complete stop before engaging the reverse gear, or vice-versa. The transmission undergoes heavy grinding if the car is engaged in the reverse gear while moving on a higher speed. On slower speeds, ranging between 5 km/h to 10 mph, the gear will get engaged but will still grind significantly while getting into the reverse slot.

To protect your car’s transmission and the health and life of the gear box, it is extremely important that we remember to stop the vehicle completely, and the put the reverse gear. The exact rule has to be followed when your car is moving in the reverse direction and you have to put the first gear in the forward-moving direction, always do bring the car to a complete halt.
