Next-gen Skoda Rapid replacement sedan: 5 things to watch out

The next-generation Skoda Rapid is currently in the works and will take on the likes of the new Honda City and Hyundai Verna when launched. Based on the localised MQB-A0-IN platform, the yet-to-be-revealed Skoda sedan has already been spied testing in India. Here’s what you can expect from the upcoming Skoda sedan.

1. It will get a new name

Skoda insiders say that the next-gen sedan will not be called the Rapid and instead it will gain an all-new name. However, it remains to be seen what name Skoda chooses. The company has already registered the name Slavia here, or it could even put the Laura name back into circulation. There are a couple of other options as well, which company insiders are keeping close to their chest for now.

2. It will be larger than the current-gen Skoda Rapid

The Skoda Rapid replacement is likely to measure around 4,480mm in length, making it longer than the current-generation Rapid (4,413mm) by a considerable amount. The next-gen Rapid is also expected to have the longest wheelbase (2,651mm) in the segment when it launches. The wheelbase should translate into plenty of legroom for passengers to really stretch, and as the new Rapid will also be 50mm wider, the cabin will feel roomier overall. Also, the new Rapid will get a large 520-litre boot, making it the best in its class.

In terms of styling, the next-gen Rapid will sport the new-age Skoda grille, sharp-cut LED lights and a flowing roof-line. While the new 2022 Skoda Rapid will share a lot of its body panels with its sister car, the VW Virtus, and its basic profile will be similar, it will also have a lot of new bits that will help give it an identity of its own.

3. It will be feature-rich

The 2022 Skoda Rapid will come loaded with equipment. Expect to get equipment like wireless charging, ‘My Skoda’ connected car tech, the new ‘Play’ touchscreen infotainment system, feather-touch AC controls, leatherette upholstery, ventilated seats, a digital instrument cluster, a high-spec audio system with six speakers and a sub-woofer, auto headlamps and auto wipers.

Even though remote engine start, remote AC operation and a panoramic sunroof may not be part of the package, expect the 2022 Rapid to be the best equipped car in its class when launched.

4. Two turbo-petrol engines on offer

The next-gen Rapid will be powered by two TSI turbo-petrol engines. The first is the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI petrol engine (from the EA211 family) that will make 115hp. The 1.0 TSI will drive the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The larger engine option will be the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI motor that will put out 150hp and a healthy 250Nm of torque; this is likely to give Skoda’s sedan class-leading performance. The 1.5 TSI will come with a quick-shifting dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

5. To launch in early 2022

The next-gen Skoda Rapid is expected to reach showrooms in early 2022. With its spacious cabin, more upmarket interiors, and powerful set of engines, Skoda will also reposition its new sedan. Whereas the current Rapid’s price ranges from Rs 7.79-13.29 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the 2022 Rapid is likely to be priced around Rs 11-15 lakh(ex-showroom), with the top-of-the-line car possibly going a bit higher. In terms of rivals, the 2022 Rapid will contend against the upcoming Volkswagen VirtusHonda CityHyundai Verna , Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Toyota Yaris.
