Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Which is the most value-for-money variant?

Maruti Suzuki first launched the Ignis back in 2017. The Ignis was funky and quirky as it targeted at the millennials. It started with an average monthly sale of 5,000-6,000 units which has tapered to around 3,000 in the recent past.

Maruti Suzuki launched the facelift of the Ignis at the Auto Expo 2020 with prices starting from Rs. 4.89 lakhs. The changes were mostly cosmetics with bumpers getting new skid plates and a new grille that was derived from the S-Presso. The new Ignis has a more SUV-like look than before. On the inside, the big change has been the addition of the updated 7-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment system that now comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Over its lifetime, the Ignis has turned from a MPV-styled hatchback to the tiny SUV-inspired city car.

What are the engine and transmission options available?

Ignis only comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces a max power output of 83PS and 113Nm of peak torque. The engine comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission.

What are the variants on offer?

There are four variants available namely Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The top three variants can be opted with an AMT transmission. Maruti is offering some features as standard which are body-coloured door handles and ORVMs, front power windows and air conditioning with heater. Safety features include high-speed alert system, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, speed alert system and rear parking sensors.

The range kicks off at Rs. 4.89 lakhs and goes all the way up to Rs. 7.19 lakhs. Below is the variant wise price list(ex-showroom):-

Which is the most value-for-money variant?

The Sigma variant misses out on a lot of features such as tachometer, dual-tone dashboard, wheel covers and an audio system which we think should be there if you are spending this much money.

We suggest, you should spend Rs. 77,000 more and that will get you the Delta variant. The variant will cost you around Rs.5.66 Lakh but you will get a lot of equipment for that money. Besides, the above-mentioned features, you will get an audio system with steering mounted audio controls, remote keyless entry, electrically adjustable ORVM, rear power windows and also a rear spoiler.

You can also opt for the AMT transmission with the Delta variant. It will make your daily commutes hassle-free and will cost you Rs. 6.13 Lakh.

The Zeta variant cost Rs. 23,000 more but doesn’t really add that much equipment and Delta variant should be enough for most of the people.

Overall, Ignis is stylish car that drives well and has a engine that is both peppy and frugal to run. If you want a car that doesn’t cost a house and yet stands out from the crowd, Ignis Delta is a pretty good option. We just wish Maruti offered the 4X4 option too—Suzuki does so in UK. If that were available, then who knows, our pick might have been different!
