Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe, GT R launch on May 27

Mercedes-Benz India has just announced that it will have an online launch on May 27 for two high-performance cars. Due to the ongoing lockdown and COVID-19 pandemic, the launch of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe and GT R will take place digitally.

The facelifted C-class range was introduced in India late in 2018 and has been subsequently updated on and off to keep it current. Now, the C 63 Coupe facelift will top the current C-class line-up (currently priced between Rs 40.90-76.50 lakh) and is expected to cost upwards of Rs 1.50 crore. The pre-facelift Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupe was on sale in India for Rs 1.60 crore until early 2019.

Unlike its four-door sedan siblings, the coupe gets a sharper, raked roofline and two-doors. Styling is also quite a bit more aggressive than the standard sedan, with AMG’s signature “Panamericana” grille being the most obvious change. A blacked-out lip spoiler on the boot and blacked-out 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels are also part of the package.

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe is powered by a 4.0-litre, V8 biturbo engine that makes 476hp and 650Nm of peak torque. All this power is channelled to the rear wheels via AMG’s 9-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. There is a more powerful version on sale in international markets – the C 63 S – which has the same V8 engine making 510hp and 700Nm of peak twisting force. In C 63 spec, the model is capable of doing the 0-100kph sprint in a claimed 4sec and hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.

In terms of equipment, it gets everything that’s on offer with the C 300d AMG Line. This includes wireless phone charger, a 9-speaker sound system paired with a 225W amplifier, a 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster (with three AMG specific displays – Classic, Sporty and Supersport), AMG-spec drive and traction modes, along with a variable suspension setup, courtesy what Mercedes likes to call AMG Ride Control.

When it launches on May 27, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe will have no direct rivals in India.

At the online event, the Mercedes-AMG GT R will also be reintroduced to our market with feature updates for 2020. What is easily Mercedes’ fastest production car in India, the AMG GT R is powered by the same 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine found in the C 63 and other AMG GT models, but is dialled up significantly. In the GT R this unit makes 585hp and 700Nm of torque and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which helps this two-door coupe hit the ton mark (from standstill) in just 3.6sec; its top speed is claimed to be over 317kph.

When the AMG GT R was on sale back in 2017, it cost a whopping Rs 2.23 crore. We even got a chance to drive it back then. Expect the 2020 GT R to cost about the same.

All prices, ex-showroom, pan-India
