BS6 Hyundai Elantra diesel launched at Rs 18.70 lakh

  • Elanta diesel available in two variants – SX MT and SX (O) AT – priced at Rs 18.70 lakh and Rs 20.65 lakh, respectively
  • New 115hp, 1.5-litre unit replaces the outgoing 1.6-litre engine
  • Base S petrol variant discontinued; petrol range now starts at Rs 17.60 lakh

Hyundai has introduced the BS6-compliant Elantra diesel, priced at Rs 18.70 lakh for the SX MT variant and Rs 20.65 lakh for the SX (O) AT variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). The BS6 diesel versions have finally joined the Elantra’s line-up; the BS6 petrols have been on sale since the sedan was updated in October 2019.

What's new on the BS6 Elantra diesel?

The pre-facelift BS4 Elantra diesel was powered by a 1.6-litre engine that made 128hp and 260Nm of torque. In the BS6 era, the Elantra gains a new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that is shared with the Kia Seltos and new Hyundai Creta. The unit puts out 115hp and 250Nm of torque and comes with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox options.

While it is down on power and torque compared to the old 1.6, the new 1.5 is likely to make up for it in terms of fuel efficiency.

How feature-laden is the BS6 Elantra diesel?

The Elantra SX variant is well-equipped, with features like automatic headlamps, an electric sunroof, dual-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Blue Link connected car tech, cruise control and push button start/stop with keyless entry. The top-spec Elantra SX (O) adds a 10-way powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, a wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery and front parking sensors.

Safety features on both variants include six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, ISOFIX child seat mounts, a rear parking camera and rear parking sensors.

What's new on the BS6 Elantra petrol?

Apart from launching the BS6 diesel, Hyundai has also rejigged the petrol variants of the Elantra. The manufacturer has decided to axe the base S variant and reduce prices for the remaining SX MT, SX AT and SX(O) AT Elantra petrol variants. With the discontinuation of the S trim the Elantra petrol range now starts at Rs 17.60 lakh, which is Rs 1.71 lakh higher than before. However, the now entry-level SX trim is much better equipped than the outgoing S trim. Given below are the new and old prices for the Elantra petrol along with the price difference.

Hyundai Elantra petrol prices
Variant Old prices New prices Difference
Elantra S MT Rs 15.89 lakh - -
Elantra SX MT Rs 18.49 lakh Rs 17.60 lakh Rs 89,000
Elantra SX AT Rs 19.49 lakh Rs 18.70 lakh Rs 79,000
Elantra SX(O) AT Rs 20.39 lakh Rs 19.55 lakh Rs 84,000

The Elantra petrol is powered by a 152hp/192Nm, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit that’s paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic.

What does the BS6 Elantra diesel take on?

Following the discontinuation of the Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Corolla Altis, the Hyundai Elantra diesel will have just one direct rival in the BS6 era, the Honda Civic diesel. Bookings for the Japanese executive sedan have been opened, with a price announcement set to take place in July.
