Hyundai Creta tops sales chart in May 2020

With only limited despatches owing to lockdown-related restrictions, May 2020 might not be a representative month for passenger vehicle sales but it sure gave Hyundai some reason to cheer. Its Creta topped the sales charts in the month marking the first time a Hyundai has been the best-selling vehicle in India. The feat also marked the first time an SUV topped India’s sales list. Here’s a look at the top 5 best-selling models in May 2020:

1. Hyundai Creta: 3,212 units

With 3,212 units sold, the Creta was the best-selling passenger vehicle last month. As mentioned, this is the first time that a Hyundai has topped a monthly sales chart. Launched just days before the nationwide lockdown came into force, the new Creta has not had a full month of sales as yet. However, with over 24,000 bookings on hand, Hyundai will have a busy few months ahead once things begin to normalise. Read our review of the Creta turbo-petrol and Creta diesel.

2. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: 2,353 units

It isn’t surprising to see a Maruti car in the top 5 best-selling cars list, but it is surprising that the Ertiga has outsold a number of much more affordable models. The Maruti Ertiga has become a petrol-only model in April 2020 – the 105hp, 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine comes with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic options. The MPV is known to be a good value product that comes with a flexible and practical cabin.

3. Maruti Suzuki Dzire: 2,215 units

The Dzire is one of Maruti Suzuki’s highest-selling models and it’s no surprise to see it on the list this month too. The Dzire has recently been given a facelift and has been upgraded with a new 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine. The Maruti Dzire, which is available in seven variants (including manual and AMT versions) faces competition from the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura, Ford Aspire and the Tata Tiago.

4. Mahindra Bolero: 1,715 units

Mahindra’s stalwart utility vehicle soldiers-on. Interestingly, Bolero sales accounted for 55.65 percent of Mahindra’s total sales in May 2020. The Bolero, which was refreshed not too long ago, is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine making 76hp and 210Nm of torque, and is available in three variants.

5. Maruti Suzuki Eeco: 1,617 units

Maruti’s utilitarian Eeco is among the most affordable ways to transport up to seven people. It’s cheap to run too and running costs can be brought down further thanks to the option of a CNG version. The Eeco went to 1,617 homes in May, giving it the final spot on the top 5 list for the month.
