Next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLC could get a 7-seat layout

  • Next-gen GLC set to grow in size

  • New GLC will be underpinned by Merc’s updated MRA platform

Mercedes-Benz has started testing the second-gen GLC SUV. The current GLC made its debut in 2016 and the all-new version could make its world premiere sometime next year, as a 2022 model.  While the existing GLC and its predecessor – the GLK – were 5-seat models, the next-gen of this SUV will most likely be offered with the option of a third row of seats.

The all-new GLC will sport a longer rear overhang and will be built on a longer wheelbase than the current-gen version. Incidentally, Mercedes-Benz already sells a long-wheelbase version of the current GLC in China, though it’s a 5-seater only.

The next-gen GLC will be based on Merc’s updated MRA architecture and will get styling similar to newer Mercedes-Benz SUVs like the latest-gen GLS (launching on June 17) and the second-gen GLA (also India-bound). The new GLC SUV will be available in a range of petrol, diesel and electric powertrain options in international markets. Currently, the GLC's key rivals, the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5, both have 5-seat layouts.

While the unveil of the new GLC is still some time away, Mercedes-Benz will reveal the all-new S-Class later this year. Closer to home, the German luxury carmaker has been on something of a launch spree, even during the lockdown. Prices for the updated Mercedes-AMG GT R and the AMG C 63 Coupe have been revealed and two new variants of the GLE (including the GLE 450 petrol) have also been introduced. During 2020, the brand has plans to bring in the A-Class Limousine, the second-gen GLA and the all-electric EQC SUV.
